Welcome to the unofficial start of summer! Memorial Day weekend is an incredibly special time on the Gulf Coast.

During this long weekend, many of us spend our time soaking in the beautiful Florida sun with our closest friends and family.

However, we also pause to remember exactly why we get to celebrate the way that we do in this great country. Here at Paradise Adventures, we are deeply thankful for the opportunity to live out our passions on the water every single day.

Most importantly, we hold profound gratitude for the brave heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice to give us that freedom.

Wondering how to Spend the Weekend?

If you are wondering how to spend the weekend in Sarasota this year, you are in the exact right place! We want you to have a safe, meaningful, and incredibly fun holiday.

Therefore, we have put together the ultimate guide on what to do on Memorial Day for 2026.

From honoring our fallen heroes at local ceremonies to enjoying relaxing kayak tours and kayak rentals on Sarasota Bay, here is everything you need to plan the perfect weekend.

Is May a Good Time to Visit Sarasota?

As you start putting together your holiday itinerary, you might naturally wonder about the local weather.

The answer is absolutely yes! In fact, May is widely considered one of the very best times of the year to visit Sarasota.

Enjoy Perfect Spring Weather and Clear Waters

During this month, the weather is beautifully warm, and the Gulf waters have reached a highly comfortable temperature for swimming and paddling

Additionally, you get to enjoy all the spectacular outdoor activities before the peak summer crowds arrive.

Because the skies are typically sunny and clear, it is a fantastic time to explore the outdoors with your loved ones.

Furthermore, the coastal breeze keeps the humidity very manageable, while the bay waters are often crystal clear, making it incredibly easy to spot passing marine life from your kayak.

What Activities Do People Do on Memorial Day?

With such perfect weather on the horizon, you might be curious about how locals spend their time.
Here in Sarasota, Memorial Day weekend is all about community, remembrance, and enjoying the great outdoors.

From Beach Picnics to St. Armands Circle Dining

Locally, families love to gather for backyard cookouts, attend beautiful concerts, and visit our local monuments to pay their respects. Furthermore, getting out on the water is a massive part of the Sarasota lifestyle.

People flock to the pristine beaches, rent boats, and book guided kayak tours to truly appreciate the natural beauty of the Florida coast.

After a peaceful afternoon navigating the calm waters of Sarasota Bay, many families head over to St. Armands Circle to enjoy fresh seafood or grab a scoop of local ice cream.

Blending a relaxing nature activity with our vibrant local culture is a wonderful way to disconnect from daily stress and truly reconnect with your family.

Is There a Memorial Day Parade in Sarasota?

When looking for holiday activities, a very common question we hear from out of town visitors is whether we host a parade.

Community Gatherings That Honor Our Heroes

While Sarasota does not typically host a massive, traditional downtown parade for Memorial Day, our city honors the holiday in deeply meaningful ways.

Instead of a parade, the community gathers together for:

  • powerful memorial services,
  • the inspiring SRQ VETS 5K Hike over the Ringling Bridge,
  • and spectacular patriotic concerts.

Because our region is home to a strong, proud veteran community, these highly engaging events capture the true spirit of the holiday perfectly.

They offer a much more intimate, heartfelt way to pay tribute than a standard parade, ensuring the true meaning of the weekend is never lost.

What to Do on Memorial Day in Sarasota: 2026 Local Events

Since our city honors the holiday with meaningful gatherings rather than a parade, you have plenty of wonderful options to choose from!

This year, our community has organized some truly spectacular events to honor our servicemembers and celebrate the holiday weekend.

To help you plan your days, we have broken down the 2026 schedule into commemorative services and family friendly gatherings.

Commemorative Ceremonies and Tributes

Taking time to reflect and honor those who served is the most important part of the weekend.

Here are the beautiful ways our community is paying respect:

  • Remembering Our Fallen Ceremony (Friday, May 22 through Monday, May 25):

This powerful photographic war memorial is a tribute to the men and women in uniform who have sacrificed their lives since 9/11, including over 300 servicemembers from Florida.

The memorial is open all weekend starting at 12:00 p.m. at Donald L. Courtney Monument Park in Bradenton. Additionally, a special Memorial Day ceremony will begin on Monday at 9:00 a.m.

  • 11th Annual SRQ VETS Memorial Day 5K Hike (Saturday, May 23):

Join the community to honor the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice. This inspiring event unites local veterans and civilian communities while raising vital funds for SRQ VETS, a volunteer veteran run organization.

Registration starts at 8:00 a.m., and the hike begins at 9:00 a.m. at JD Hamel War Memorial Park in Sarasota.

  • National Moment of Remembrance (Monday, May 25):

At exactly 3:00 p.m. local time, Americans everywhere are asked to pause for one minute to remember those who have died in military service.

TAPS Across America encourages musicians to play TAPS during this time, as it is the hour most Americans are enjoying their time off from work.

Family Friendly Concerts and Gatherings

After paying your respects, you can celebrate the freedoms we hold dear by enjoying live music and community fun:

  • Free Music Friday Night Concert (Friday, May 22):

Kick off the weekend with live music at Centennial Park featuring the talented Al Fusco. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and comfortable blankets.

Please note that no alcohol is permitted in the park. This wonderful community event runs from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is completely free and open to the public.

  • Patriotic Pops and Fireworks (Saturday, May 23):

Enjoy an unforgettable evening at CoolToday Park with the Venice Symphony! Music Director Troy Quinn will lead a concert of great American music, including a powerful salute to the Armed Forces.

The world famous a cappella group, Liberty Voices, will also perform. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with free parking, and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

  • Knights of Columbus Memorial Day Picnic (Monday, May 25):

Bring the family to Venice for a classic picnic featuring hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, and ice cream!

Doors open at 11:00 a.m., followed by a flag raising at noon. Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for kids.

  • Sarasota Concert Band’s Memorial Day Concert (Monday, May 25):

Enjoy a free, relaxing evening of music at the scenic Phillippi Estate Park from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Bring a lawn chair, pack some snacks, and purchase some delicious ice cream while live music fills the air.

1. Take Time to Reflect.

First and foremost, let us always remember who Memorial Day is really about.

We encourage you to take a quiet moment to honor those who have fallen so that we can enjoy the beautiful lives we live today.

2. Always Wear a PFD (Personal Flotation Device).

Safety is our top priority! Life jackets are incredibly important any time you are in the water, but they are especially vital on busy holiday weekends. During Memorial Day, there are boats, jet skis, and swimmers all around Sarasota Bay.

Even when you can stand in the shallow water, you want to be fully protected. When you book with Paradise Adventures, we provide Coast Guard approved life vests for your entire family.

3. Truly Enjoy Your Time With Family.

Most of us work so very hard to provide for our loved ones. However, Memorial Day is a rare opportunity where you can simply sit back and enjoy their wonderful company.

Do not take that time for granted!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How early should we arrive for our Memorial Day kayaking trip?

Because Memorial Day weekend brings much heavier traffic to Lido Key, we highly recommend planning your drive carefully. You must arrive exactly 20 minutes prior to your launch time to properly check in. Leaving your hotel or house a little earlier than usual ensures you can easily find parking at Ted Sperling Park and start your adventure stress free.

Can we bring our own coolers for a holiday picnic on the water?

Yes, you are completely welcome to bring small, soft sided coolers! Packing some delicious sandwiches and refreshing beverages makes for a wonderful floating picnic. Alcohol is also permitted, so adults can certainly bring their favorite drinks to enjoy while relaxing on the water. We simply ask that everyone drinks responsibly for their own safety. Furthermore, please be sure to securely pack away all of your trash so we can work together to keep Sarasota Bay perfectly clean and beautiful.

What is your weather policy if a spring shower happens?

Florida weather can occasionally be unpredictable during late May. Therefore, we constantly monitor the radar to ensure your complete safety. If dangerous lightning or high winds occur, we will proactively contact you to reschedule your outing or provide a full refund. However, we do still paddle in light, passing rain, which actually feels quite refreshing on a warm day!

Are dogs allowed to join us in the kayaks?

As much as we absolutely love your furry friends, dogs and other pets are unfortunately not allowed on our kayaks or tours. We must strictly adhere to Sarasota County park rules, which prohibit pets in order to protect the delicate local wildlife and ecosystem. We greatly appreciate your understanding, and we hope you have a fantastic time paddling while your pets relax safely at home!
