Morning: Breakfast and Famous Florida Sights
Every great vacation day starts with an excellent breakfast. Before you hit the water, your group will want to fuel up for the adventure ahead.
We highly recommend starting your morning right in the heart of St. Armands Circle.
This lush outdoor shopping and dining area is iconic to Sarasota and offers a wonderful atmosphere before the afternoon crowds arrive.
There are plenty of fantastic cafes that open early. You can grab a massive stack of pancakes for the kids and a strong cup of locally roasted coffee for yourself.
Furthermore, St. Armands is just a short, scenic drive right over the bridge to your next destination. Once everybody has a full stomach and a smile on their face, it is time to head toward the park for the absolute highlight of your day.
The Main Event: The Lido Key Kayak Tour by Paradise Adventures
When parents ask us for the best things to do in Sarasota with kids, we always point them straight to the water. Getting out into nature is an incredible experience, and there is no better way to do it than exploring the local waterways.
You will take a very short drive down to Ted Sperling Nature Park at 190 Taft Drive. This is where your family will meet the friendly crew from Paradise Adventures Sarasota, FL, for their premier Lido Key Kayak Tour.
Why Paradise Adventures is the Absolute Best Choice
Choosing the right outfitter makes all the difference when traveling with your family. Paradise Adventures has built an outstanding reputation for making logistics incredibly easy and completely stress-free.
When you arrive at the park, just look for the aluminum open kayak trailer with the white sign and the bright orange kayaks.
Dedicated team members will be right there to warmly welcome you, check you in, and make sure you have everything you need for a successful launch.
Choose Exactly How you Want to Experience the Bay:
The Expert Guided Eco-Tour:
If you want to sit back and let a local expert lead the way, the guided tour is a fantastic choice. For $65 for a single kayak or $130 for a tandem kayak, you get a premium, small-group experience. Your guide takes all the guesswork out of navigating.
They will lead you directly to known manatee and dolphin hotspots, make a special stop at the stunning, newly formed Kelly’s Spring, and expertly guide you through the winding mangrove tunnels.
Our guides provide wonderful local insight while prioritizing safety and wildlife respect.
The Flexible 3-Hour Kayak Rental:
If your family prefers to set their own pace, the 3-hour kayak rental is an incredibly budget-friendly alternative. Priced at just $49 for a single kayak and $75 for a tandem kayak, this option is perfect for friends and families who want to explore independently.
You get the same high-quality bright orange kayaks, lightweight fiberglass paddles, comfortable life jackets, and dry bags to keep your phones secure.
The crew even provides a complimentary water bottle and a local map to ensure you are completely ready to paddle.
Paddling the Magical Mangrove Tunnels
Whether you choose the guided tour or the flexible rental, the absolute star of the show is the Lido Key mangrove forest.
Within minutes of launching, you leave the bright sun behind and enter a cool, shaded labyrinth of green branches.
The water here is incredibly shallow, flat, and completely protected from the wind.
Consequently, it is the safest and most relaxing environment for young children and beginner paddlers to build their confidence on the water.
Lunch: Casual Family Dining by the Bay
Paddling through the beautiful waterways certainly works up quite an appetite. By the time you return your kayaks to the launch site, the whole family will be ready for a great meal!
Fortunately, you do not have to travel far to find some amazing, kid-friendly food.
North to City Island:
We recommend heading just a few minutes north to City Island. Here you will find amazing, casual local staples that are totally laid back.
You can show up in your sandals and slightly damp kayaking clothes without any issue at all.
The kids can enjoy hot dogs, chicken fingers, or fresh grouper sandwiches while you relax. Best of all, you get to sit on wooden decks right over the water.
You can actually watch the boats go by and keep an eye out for dolphins while you eat your lunch. It is the perfect bridge between your morning and afternoon activities.
Afternoon: Marine Science or Sandy Beaches
After a great lunch, the afternoon is completely yours to enjoy. Depending on the energy levels of your kids, you have two absolutely fantastic options located right near your lunch spot:
- Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium
If your family loves seeing the wildlife during your Lido Key Kayak Tour, you have to visit Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium.
Mote is a world-class working marine research facility. Your kids can touch stingrays in the interactive pools, watch the resident sharks, and learn all about local sea turtle rescue programs.
It is fully air-conditioned, incredibly educational, and a perfect way to spend a couple of hours out of the direct afternoon sun.
- Relaxing on the Pristine Sands
If your idea of the perfect afternoon involves putting your toes in the sand, just head straight to Lido Beach. This beach is famous for its powdery white sand and calm, clear Gulf waters.
It is generally much less crowded than neighboring beaches, making it a favorite for local families.
You can spread out a big towel, build sandcastles with the kids, and let them splash safely in the gentle shoreline waves.
It is the ultimate way to unwind and soak in the Florida sunshine before heading back to your hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Are there age restrictions for kayak tours and rentals?
Our kayak rentals and tours are incredibly family-friendly! Children as young as 2 years old can comfortably and safely join the fun. We highly recommend our tandem kayaks for families with young children, allowing an adult to steer in the back while the child sits safely in the front. We have various life vest sizes available upon request to ensure everyone has a proper, secure fit.
What should we bring for our time on the water?
You should bring a few simple essentials for a comfortable trip. We recommend packing extra drinking water, a towel, sunblock, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and light, water-resistant clothing and shoes. If you have an action camera, definitely bring it along! Paradise Adventures provides the dry bags to keep your non-waterproof phones and keys perfectly safe.
What happens if we are running late for our rental?
It is extremely important to plan your driving time carefully. Launches adhere to a strict Sarasota County park schedule. You must arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled time to park, check in, and prepare. Unfortunately, operators cannot accommodate late arrivals, and latecomers cannot be launched due to these strict county rules. Please give yourself plenty of time to arrive at 190 Taft Drive.
What is the cancellation policy if our plans change?
We have a very straightforward and fair policy. If you cancel at least 48 hours before your scheduled launch time, you will receive a full refund. You also receive a full refund if the operator has to cancel due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. If you cancel less than 48 hours before your tour or rental, no cash refund will be issued, but your reservation will be rescheduled at no additional cost. If you cannot decide on a new date immediately, we will issue a gift card rain check. Please note that no-shows will not be refunded. You can reach the office at (941) 275-2971 for any changes.
Will we definitely see manatees and dolphins?
Sarasota Bay is a vibrant, natural habitat. While the guided tours visit well-known hotspots and the rental maps point you in the right direction, these are wild animals on their own schedules. We can never offer a 100% guarantee on sightings. However, we frequently spot playful dolphins and gentle manatees throughout the bay, making every trip a wonderful opportunity for wildlife encounters!
